In addition to his coaching duties as associate head coach for Virginia Tech, Frayer plays a huge role in the every day functions of the SERTC. From recruiting new resident athletes, to fundraising, to developing freestyle training plans; he heads a significant portion of all operations.
As a 2012 Olympian and five time U.S. National Team member Jared Frayer provides the SERTC with some of the highest level of coaching available. His work started with the SERTC before he ever stepped on the mat to coach Virginia Tech. He lead Walz to his U23 World Team berth in ‘17.
The following year (‘18) he invested significant time into the then redshirt freshman, Mekhi Lewis. The investment payed off as Lewis made his first Junior World Team and brought home the Junior World Title from Slovakia. That summer freestyle then multiplied itself twofold as Frayer led Lewis to become the first ever national champion in Virginia Tech history in ‘19.
Frayer also played a pivotal role in the acquisition of former SERTC athletes James Green and Nahshon Garrett. Green added significant value to the practice room from a partner standpoint as well as technical master.. He went on to be the first Senior World Team Member for any resident athlete at the SERTC. Frayer coached him to a Senior Nationals title in ‘21 as well as his through his performance in Oslo, Norway for his 6th world team appearance.
Most recently, Frayer coached Bryce Andonian to a Junior Nationals title in ‘21. Andonian went on to take home the 70kg Bronze medal in the Junior Worlds in Ufa, Russia, all with Frayer in his corner. His work with Andonian wasn’t finished as he guided him along to a third place finish in the 2022 NCAA Championships,
Frayer’s coaching impact on both the SERTC and Virginia Tech are significant and have laid the groundwork for future athletes to come. His past competitive experiences coupled with his distinguished coaching record makes him a vital component to the SERTC here in Blacksburg.
